Sydenham Arts and Kirkdale Bookshop are delighted to invite you to the launch of our Great War Classroom project on Monday 27th of June at 7.30pm at the Kirkdale Bookshop.
Guest speakers will include Dr Barry Blades author of Roll of Honour. Schooling and the Great War 1914-1919 an independent researcher and author of historical non fiction and Mike Tibbetts who is working with Sydenham Arts researching the factual histories of real teachers and school children in South-East London to find out how the war affected the activities and atmosphere in a typical school classroom. Mike will also be leading the performance of the immersive classroom experience at local festivals, schools and community centres, playing the character of the teacher based on the real-life person of Charles Maddock Stuart, who was the first headmaster of St. Dunstan’s College in Catford when it opened in 1888.
Join us for a glass of wine to hear them speak and take the opportunity to contribute to our understanding of early 20th century education. Do you have images from the period, or remember family members talking about teaching or being pupils during the Great War? If you do please join us.
The project is funded by Heritage Lottery
