Poetry Town began in 2015 with a weekly poem displayed in the window of Kirkdale Bookshop. Following overwhelmingly positive responses from customers we have decided to partner with Sydenham Arts to build on the idea and fill Sydenham with poetry not just by famous poets but by local people, both young and old.

I hover by the modern novels,
turn the accidental page,
try to focus. Instead of words
I recollect a rainy lunch hour,
umbrellas round me opening
to sudden flowers: the novelty
of black. Such revelation spinning
in the square as petals. And water
splashing neutral flowers between.
Momentary tilt of one umbrella.
Glimpse of the wistful face beneath,
so scarved against the cold, so young.
Who was she? Words on the fleeting page
grow clear … “The girl that was woman answered
—I shall be to you whatever
I may let you make of me.”
