Poetry Town began in 2015 with a weekly poem displayed in the window of Kirkdale Bookshop. Following overwhelmingly positive responses from customers we have decided to partner with Sydenham Arts to build on the idea and fill Sydenham with poetry not just by famous poets but by local people, both young and old.
17th January 2018
We went along in absolute silence:
it was coming on to a dusk of a clear
hot day, there was a harvest smell.
Armfuls of red apples blushed in the shade,
leaves wound in and out enjoying the cool.
Chestnuts were dying. It was the day of the dead.
Inside the woods there was a cave,
and a wise woman as old as a Sibyl
weaving her hands in the flowing air.
She stood three hours under the blossoming tree
bloody with fruit, may trees in flower,
bloody with fruit, loud with prophecy.
